Friends of Cherry Hinton Brook

The Unveiling of the Mural in 2023.

— a precious Cambridge chalk stream

At the end of November 2023, the mural created for Friends of Cherry Hinton Brook by Rowan was unveiled by the Mayor, Councillor Jenny Gawthrope Wood at Sainsbury's.

The culmination of persistent work by Emmy Smart, the idea of a mural at Sainsbury's had first been mooted ten years ago. A donation of £500 from Sainsbury's in 2016 helped us raise more funds through public S106 art funding from the City Council. The very colourful mural, which is 2.20 m high and 3.65 m wide, was designed, painted, and installed by Rowan Arts Centre, an organisation which works with adults with learning difficulties. It features some of the wildlife found in and alongside Cherry Hinton Brook.

We have teamed up with Rowan to create some merchandise for their shop, the proceeds from which are being shared between Rowan and FCHB. The following items are on sale:

  • Jigsaw (showing the whole mural) - 500 or 1000 pieces
  • Greeting cards (8 designs, showing the whole mural or “Titbits” from it) examples below
  • Posters (of the whole mural) shown below right in a frame

A memory game and tea towels will be available soon. Buy these as your Christmas gifts and help both Rowan and us at the same time! Rowan’s online shop.
